Poppy seeds are an oil seed removed from poppy seed pods. Widely cultivated from ancient days in Central Europe and South Asia, these seeds are usually brownish black or creamy white in color. The seeds are used either whole or ground to paste before adding to the dishes. When toasted, it gives a nutty aroma. Seeds are pressed to extract poppyseed oil. Poppy seeds are ground to paste to thicken sauces, curries, stews and soups. Using it moderately enhances the flavor of any sweet or savory dish. These tiny seeds are rich in thiamine, folate, iron, calcium, magnesium, zinc, copper, manganese and phosphorus. They are beneficial for bone health, and contain pain relieving and sleep-inducing properties. In addition, they contain trace amounts of omega-3 fatty acids and polyphenols beneficial for healthy heart.
